The War of The Worlds Broadsheet
The ISTD: Open | Close brief involved creating a radical re imagining of the first and last chapter of a chosen book through the use of typography. Taking into consideration typographic detailing, pace, format, paper stock, paper engineering, binding and casing. Thinking about how the design and production expresses the narrative arc of the story.
The strategy for my re imaging of the classic novel The War Of The Worlds by H.G Wells was to bring new life to the story, attracting a new younger audience to a classic story, emphasizing its messages and helping them to attain an interest in classic novels.
We are constantly absorbing short form content on a regular basis. Perhaps leading to decreased attentiveness, particularly in younger generations. Thus meaning many do not have the attention span to read a full novel.
This project aims to engage that audience by making the first and last chapter more engaging and attention grabbing through its use of typography, layout and pacing. Helping them to gain an appreciation for classic novels and typographic design.
The broadsheet format was inspired by the way news would have been received at the time of the books setting and when it was written. Bringing this into a modern setting and taking influence from modern broadsheets while shortening the content to increase accessibility to the target audience.
